Sunday Scraps #127

A fabulous documentary about Andy Warhol / a Pride Poppy pin / a lovely blog post about product people / the new Apple home screen is the least elegant smart home display I’ve seen in a long time / John made some lovely cards for anyone looking to work on their climate work / a great visualisation of who is financially benefitting from the Palestine genocide / I don’t know what an erotic engineering retreat is but it sounds great / a show about protest art during the AIDS crisis / I am seriously considering spending a Saturday learning about architectural magazines / remember that November 27th is Buy Nothing Day / I spent a weekend in Budapest recently and the Rock of Starvation was visible / a lovely old folk song made modern / on indeterminacy in music /  the refuge d’art hiking trail in France looks like fun / the new William Morris exhibition about activism looks great .

Added to my commonplace book:

Evans gets out of the way. It’s as close to the absence of an obvious strategy that I know of. (photographer Garry Winogrand giving a lecture)

There’s only so much time in every day. You have to decide what you want it to be about. (artist Liz Larner)

Sometimes I can boil a point to its provocative limit. […] Writing is, obviously, when you have to choke off your curiosity and start to come up with some answers. (from a lovely interview with the author of a new biography of Chuck Berry)

When I am in a difficult or sad situation, I need to create some distance so that I am not swallowed by the event. (artist Sophie Calle)

The only thing we should try to do, he says, is live a life which can naturally capture the light. (Ai Wei Wei)

In social news, I’ve been taking modern Greek lessons at City Lit on Monday nights and it’s been fantastic for my pattern recognition. I’m hoping to make good use of it next April in Hydra (my fifth trip there).
