I had the extreme pleasure of attending Open Sauces<\/a> in Bruxelles yesterday which was organised by the great people at fo.am<\/a>. I was invited to give a toast and did so on a course that was served with a plate from the Topoware<\/a> collection. I thought I’d archive what I said.<\/p>\n

Before I take a bite<\/p>\n

I\u2019m thinking about<\/p>\n

– what i wish i hadn’t eaten yesterday
\n– what i will eat tomorrow
\n– the millions of obese children in the UK<\/p>\n

– how i used to be able to carry a really heavy laptop around all the time
\n– how its so easy to get kids to exercise but not adults
\n– how many staircases will i have to go up and down to\u00a0 burn this off?
\n– how I wished we weren\u2019t so addicted to elevators and escalators<\/p>\n

– how i should make an effort to eat more locally
\n– i hope the people involved in picking this food were well treated
\n– i hope the food miles of this meal aren’t too high
\n– how much of this will end up being thrown away
\n– could i have grown it myself?
\n– how much did this cost?<\/p>\n

–\u00a0 how many calories this is anyway
\n– i wonder if the ingredients list is lying
\n– is this part of my 5 a day?
\n– is this too much? not enough?
\n– how much salt is in this?
\n– how much sugar is in this?
\n– what kind of vitamins am i getting from this?
\n– am i equipped to digest this?<\/p>\n

– how my mother told me its not polite to leave food in your plate
\n– how certain foods stopped being part of my diet after childhood
\n– how I can still remember my mom\u2019s chicken sauce recipe just by thinking about it<\/p>\n
