I take this as a good omen.<\/p>\n<p>A friend is helping make and install <a href=\"https:\/\/sfbabc.org\/\">public benches<\/a>\u00a0 where they are needed and I so wish London would get over its propensity for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hostile_architecture\">hostile architecture<\/a> \/ I didn&#8217;t know radon in buildings was a cause of lung cancer but my flat is in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukradon.org\/information\/ukmaps\">low risk zone<\/a> thank the gods \/ a call for papers about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designhistorysociety.org\/news\/view\/design-history-society-2026-conference-call-for-papers-now-open\">design in an age of uncertainty<\/a> \/ i wonder if the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homeworld2021.uk\/\">Homeworld<\/a> will come out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/jan\/20\/uk-warm-homes-plan-gas-boilers-billions-heat-pumps\">Warm Homes Plan<\/a> \/ Phin is organising another <a href=\"https:\/\/phineasharper.com\/turncoats\">turncoats<\/a> \/ I didn&#8217;t know <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2025\/sep\/28\/rachel-cooper-obituary\">Rachel Cooper<\/a> had passed away recently \/ I&#8217;m watching lectures about AI and trying to pin down who came up with new expressions like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cognitiverevolution.ai\/openai-and-google-race-to-her-is-the-big-tech-singularity-near-part-1-with-zvi-mowshowitz\/\">universal assistants<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marktechpost.com\/2024\/08\/11\/andrej-karpathy-coined-a-new-term-jagged-intelligence-understanding-the-inconsistencies-in-advanced-ai\/\">jagged intelligence<\/a> \/ imitating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2026\/jan\/09\/rise-of-analogue-bag-fashion-answer-to-doomscrolling\">young people<\/a> and making <a href=\"https:\/\/thefoldline.com\/products\/the-makers-atelier-boat-neck-top\">this top<\/a> this week although I think I ended up with a fabric that makes me look like a circus clown \/ an exit interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/99percentinvisible.org\/episode\/655-exit-interview-with-michael-bierut\/\">Michael Beirut<\/a> \/ I should get into <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/August_Is_a_Wicked_Month\">Edna O&#8217;Brien<\/a> \/ the <a href=\"https:\/\/gagosian.com\/exhibitions\/2026\/nan-goldin-the-ballad-of-sexual-dependency\/\">Nan Goldin<\/a> is very good but go midweek (this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moma.org\/collection\/works\/101659\">photo<\/a> still gets to me as I have been that girl) \/ an instagram flutter (is that a thing?) pointed me to these <a href=\"http:\/\/johnsalvatier.org\/blog\/2017\/reality-has-a-surprising-amount-of-detail\">two<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nadia.xyz\/basic\">excellent<\/a> essays about tech and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Added to <strong>my commonplace book<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\">Or, more to the point, how can we know that our memories of happiness are true?\u00a0 I spend an inordinate portion of my professional life creeping around in my own psyche, untangling knots of nostalgia and pleasure and, god, so many emotions, not least self-love and self-loathing, all of them unavoidable colorants of any bite I take. That happens maybe two to three times a year and is always so magical.
