I\u2019m obsessed with public signage about the natural world. Often terrible, temporary and inaccessible, they\u2019re an expression of our eco-anxiety, magical thinking and ambivalence about our place in the natural world. Here are some examples from my own walks and hikes in London of the kinds of signs we could improve on easily:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Too much text<\/strong><br \/>\nOn my walk along <a href=\"https:\/\/innerlondonramblers.org.uk\/images\/RingandLoop\/guides\/CR06-wimbledon-park-to-richmond-Dec24.pdf\">Section 6 of the Capital Ring Walk<\/a>, this very busy A4 will tell you all about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpcc.org.uk\/nature\/queensmere\">Queensmere rewilding project<\/a> that is recreating a historic pond. It won&#8217;t surprise to hear they&#8217;ve been struggling. The sign was made by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpcc.org.uk\/about-us\/our-history\">Wimbledon and Putney Commons<\/a> who are a charity and manage the land. I think it&#8217;s cute for a restaurant menu which changes weekly but for a \u00a31.2M <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wildlondon.org.uk\/projects\/reuniting-sydenham-hill-and-dulwich\">London Wildlife Trust project<\/a>? This sign makes it hard to understand what the call to action is because there are two to three. And something that lasts 6 months of the year every year deserves more than a laminated A4.\u00a0 A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-illustration\/no-dogs-allowed-water-swimming-prohibition-1470911987\">no dogs swimming sign<\/a> with dates below it would be nice and more visually understandable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-3313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-768x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-768x1024.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-1152x1536.jpeg 1152w, https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-1536x2048.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-1568x2091.jpeg 1568w, https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/IMG_9804-scaled.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This last example was stapled to an unhappy looking tree 5 minutes from my flat. This is a notice so it should really say &#8216;Tree Removal Notice&#8217; and the copy could do with focusing on the time frame but I&#8217;m not even sure that&#8217;s the focus. When we give up on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2025\/jul\/23\/labour-unions-green-jobs-net-zero-energy\">a strong national story about mitigating the effects of climate change<\/a>, we end up giving climate communication to charities, local authorities and community projects. We fragment an important national and global project. I would love to see a working group in Central Government (perhaps as part of the\u00a0future <a href=\"https:\/\/bills.parliament.uk\/bills\/3819\">Government Office for Green Spaces<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-environment-food-rural-affairs\">DEFRA<\/a> ) develop some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/channel\/give-me-a-sign\/\">environmental symbols<\/a> with ecologists and graphic designers.
