That includes me and after ten years in this country, what should I do?<\/p>\n<p name=\"0f69\" id=\"0f69\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/becoming-a-british-citizen\/check-if-you-can-apply\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/becoming-a-british-citizen\/check-if-you-can-apply\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Apply for citizenship (naturalisation) of course<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p name=\"0e71\" id=\"0e71\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">I used to work as a secretary for an immigration lawyer as a young woman, so I got quite comfortable with paperwork. It\u2019s not scary, it\u2019s just about being diligent. So I thought I\u2019d share some of what I found applying for citizenship as a professional with an Italian passport. So I\u2019m not a lawyer, just trying to help.<\/p>\n<p name=\"508b\" id=\"508b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">First off: if you start your application right now, it will take you <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">over a year and a half<\/strong>. So chop chop. Article 50 negotiations will take 2 years so no time to waste.<\/p>\n<p name=\"f28f\" id=\"f28f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Assumptions:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li name=\"d6d9\" id=\"d6d9\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">you\u2019ve been living in the UK <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">more than 5 years<\/strong>\n<\/li>\n<li name=\"d439\" id=\"d439\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">you\u2019re applying on your own<\/li>\n<li name=\"31db\" id=\"31db\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">you\u2019re in employment<\/li>\n<li name=\"bdc7\" id=\"bdc7\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">you\u2019re older than 18<\/li>\n<li name=\"e595\" id=\"e595\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">you haven\u2019t committed any crimes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p name=\"9019\" id=\"9019\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">(If you\u2019re a student, the spouse of a British, on a family or anything else, you\u2019ll have to consult the very <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/becoming-a-british-citizen\/check-if-you-can-apply\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/becoming-a-british-citizen\/check-if-you-can-apply\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">badly laid out government site for it.<\/a> But it\u2019s a gov.uk site I hear you say! Yes and it looks pretty but it gives you no sense of what\u2019s important and how long it\u2019ll take.)<\/p>\n<p name=\"3b92\" id=\"3b92\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Here\u2019s a list of what you need to prepare if you\u2019re planning on staying in the UK after Brexit as an EU citizen.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li name=\"8870\" id=\"8870\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Keep an eye on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-to-naturalise-as-a-british-citizen-form-an\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-to-naturalise-as-a-british-citizen-form-an\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Naturalisation page and the edits<\/a> (at the bottom of the page), they change them all the time and there\u2019s no way of getting updates or notification on changes. All you can see is a page history.<\/li>\n<li name=\"e58a\" id=\"e58a\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Start saving up some money, the fees for naturalisation are currently <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">\u00a31282<\/strong> (as of writing this)<\/li>\n<li name=\"4db3\" id=\"4db3\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Start a travel spreadsheet with 5 columns<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li name=\"82f4\" id=\"82f4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Country visited<\/li>\n<li name=\"d767\" id=\"d767\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Reason (Holiday, Business travel, visiting relatives)<\/li>\n<li name=\"4f16\" id=\"4f16\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Date of departure<\/li>\n<li name=\"dc52\" id=\"dc52\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Date of return to the UK<\/li>\n<li name=\"f377\" id=\"f377\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Total number of days absent (note the days of travel don\u2019t count towards this total)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p name=\"a71f\" id=\"a71f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">Fill in this in for the last <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">five years<\/strong>. You will be referring to this a lot.<\/p>\n<p name=\"e283\" id=\"e283\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">4. Buy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsoshop.co.uk\/Life-in-the-UK\/Life-in-the-United-Kingdom-A-Guide-for-New-Residents\/?TrackID=002353\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.tsoshop.co.uk\/Life-in-the-UK\/Life-in-the-United-Kingdom-A-Guide-for-New-Residents\/?TrackID=002353\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Life in the UK<\/a> book <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(\u00a312.99)<\/strong> and start studying it. You shouldn\u2019t need more than 20 hours of study.<\/p>\n<p name=\"56cd\" id=\"56cd\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">5. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/life-in-the-uk-test\/book-life-in-uk-test\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/life-in-the-uk-test\/book-life-in-uk-test\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Book a Life in the Uk test<\/a> <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(\u00a350)<\/strong> in a local test centre. Stick to their ID requirements. Make sure you don\u2019t bring printed e-bills as proof of address, they won\u2019t take them. And yes I found out because I made that mistake.<\/p>\n<p name=\"8a36\" id=\"8a36\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">6. If you have not studied in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/english-language\/overview\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/english-language\/overview\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an accredited English speaking institution<\/a>, you\u2019ll have to prove you can speak english and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/english-language\/approved-english-language-qualifications\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/english-language\/approved-english-language-qualifications\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sit a spoken test (ESOL) at a test centre<\/a>. <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">(\u00a3150)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p name=\"9d22\" id=\"9d22\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">7. You will have to collect P60s for the last 5 years and lots of information proving you have been working, employed at all times, running your own company, VAT returns, proof of payments, payslips, etc. It doesn\u2019t matter if you decide to hire a lawyer or not, they can\u2019t fish those documents out for you, so start digging.<\/p>\n<p name=\"fcb4\" id=\"fcb4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Brace yourself now.<\/p>\n<p name=\"eea7\" id=\"eea7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Official Step 1: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eea-registration-certificate\/permanent-residence\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eea-registration-certificate\/permanent-residence\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Apply for a permanent residence document<\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li name=\"bbfd\" id=\"bbfd\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Apply to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eea-registration-certificate\/permanent-residence\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/eea-registration-certificate\/permanent-residence\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Prove your right to stay in the UK as an EU citizen<\/a>. <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">(\u00a365)<\/strong> which you co <a href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/product\/eea-pr\" data-href=\"https:\/\/visas-immigration.service.gov.uk\/product\/eea-pr\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">do online<\/a>. It looks long but it isn\u2019t, half of it won\u2019t even apply to you.<\/li>\n<li name=\"8cf0\" id=\"8cf0\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">As part of this y<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/european-passport-return-service\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/european-passport-return-service\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ou should book an appointment<\/a> at your local council for a European passport return service so they can verify your passport in person and they won\u2019t take it away from you. <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">(The fee depends on the council, I paid \u00a325)<\/strong>\n<\/li>\n<li name=\"b8c9\" id=\"b8c9\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">This can take up to 6 months to process. Mine took 2.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p name=\"1d99\" id=\"1d99\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Once you have this, you may need to wait 12 months. F<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/583821\/AN_Booklet_-_January_2017.pdf\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/583821\/AN_Booklet_-_January_2017.pdf\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">rom page 9 of the guide<\/strong><\/a><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote name=\"04b8\" id=\"04b8\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf--startsWithDoubleQuote graf-after--p\"><p>\u201c[you need to] have held permanent resident status for 12 months before applying for naturalisation. This means that you may need to wait until you have been in the United Kingdom for 6 years before you can apply. When you apply for a permanent residence document the evidence that you supply for your EEA(PR) application must be for a 5 year period that ended at least a year before you want to apply for citizenship.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote name=\"326e\" id=\"326e\" class=\"graf graf--blockquote graf-after--blockquote\"><p>For example:<br \/>\u00a0If you apply for Permanent Residence on 1 March 2017 and want to apply for citizenship once that application is decided, you should send evidence that shows you were exercising Treaty rights as a qualified person or family member from 1 March 2011 to 1 March 2016.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p name=\"a028\" id=\"a028\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Official Step 2: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-to-naturalise-as-a-british-citizen-form-an\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-to-naturalise-as-a-british-citizen-form-an\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Naturalisation<\/a><\/p>\n<p name=\"e382\" id=\"e382\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">NB: <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Make sure you have not travelled for more than 90 days in the year prior to your application<\/strong> AND you were in the UK \u201con the day 5 years before the application is received by the Home Office\u201d. Random I know.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li name=\"8929\" id=\"8929\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\">Fill in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-to-naturalise-as-a-british-citizen-form-an\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/application-to-naturalise-as-a-british-citizen-form-an\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">AN application<\/a> <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">(\u00a31282)<\/strong>\n<\/li>\n<li name=\"ba5b\" id=\"ba5b\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">Book an appointment at your local NCS (National Checking Service) who will go through your application with you right there and then (Cost \u00a30!) They\u2019ll also photocopy your passport, residence permit and documents right there and hand them back to you.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li name=\"6406\" id=\"6406\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">They will take between 3\u20136 months to come back with a decision.<\/li>\n<li name=\"b147\" id=\"b147\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Once they take your money (only \u00a380 is refunded if the application is denied) they will mail you to confirm they have taken your money and will ask you to go to a Post Office to get your picture and fingerprints taken for a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.postoffice.co.uk\/foreign-nationals-enrolment-biometric-residence-permit\" data-href=\"http:\/\/www.postoffice.co.uk\/foreign-nationals-enrolment-biometric-residence-permit\" class=\"markup--anchor markup--li-anchor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">biometric residence permit<\/a> (\u00a319.20) Don\u2019t ask me why they don\u2019t do that at the NCS directly.
