{"id":1810,"date":"2015-02-11T16:27:18","date_gmt":"2015-02-11T16:27:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/?p=1810"},"modified":"2015-02-11T17:28:02","modified_gmt":"2015-02-11T17:28:02","slug":"iot-for-the-common-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.designswarm.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/iot-for-the-common-person\/","title":{"rendered":"The Internet of things for the common man &#038; woman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I took\u00a0part in the Digital Catapult Advisory Meeting this afternoon and we were presented an exam question: How do you sell #iot to the average man\/woman?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my suggestions of things to say to people who ask this in the pub (note: this will possibly never happen):<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Making sure your grandfather\u00a0can stay healthy &amp; independent in his own\u00a0home longer<\/strong> because we can track <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/wearables\/apple-watch-app-glucose-levels-diabetes\/\">his\u00a0blood sugar level<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mylively.com\/\">whether he&#8217;s fallen<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ageuk.org.uk\/\">how long its been since he&#8217;s talked to someone else<\/a>\u00a0all remotely, engaging\u00a0NHS, social care services and local communities at the right time. Don&#8217;t think about it as tracking, think about it as caring.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Support\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citylab.com\/cityfixer\/2014\/09\/a-danish-city-is-using-gps-to-track-and-help-the-homeless\/380516\/\">homeless\u00a0children and adults<\/a>\u00a0and women in domestic abuse situations<\/strong> have access to help quicker because we know where they are when they need help with sensors and GPS tracking.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0<strong>Helping you and your children manage your asthma &amp; allergies better<\/strong> because city councils can tell <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adjacentgovernment.co.uk\/lg-edition-001\/brixton-listening-lab-moving-communities-forward\/\">what the level of pollution is on busy streets with sensors attached to street lamps<\/a>. So pedestrian only areas can be planned for, or\u00a0transport alternative offered dynamically to you by apps\u00a0like <a href=\"https:\/\/citymapper.com\/\">CityMapper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Help improve your\u00a0work\u00a0environment and eyesight<\/strong> if you work with computers by <a href=\"https:\/\/cubesensors.com\/\">measuring the environment you work in<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lumobodytech.com\/lumoback\/\">your posture<\/a>\u00a0reminding you when to take breaks too.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <strong>Let you know quickly if your <a href=\"http:\/\/oxfloodnet.co.uk\/\">house is going to be flooded<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>These are simple, but if we can&#8217;t convince people like my mother that the internet of things isn&#8217;t some kind of job-killing technology-driven-corporate-led move to destroy society, we&#8217;ll never get the support we need in the UK to innovate.\u00a0If you have more, do add them to the comments!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I took\u00a0part in the Digital Catapult Advisory Meeting this afternoon and we were presented an exam question: How do you sell #iot to the average man\/woman?
