Stay Tuned & Commitment Radio (dec 2004 - april 2006)
This project was developed with Dave Chiu and rethinks our interactions with the radio.
"Stay Tuned" is a reflection on the passive state of the radio listener now whereas before, the radio was a powerful information media that required all the family's attention. Stay Tuned proposes to put some of that action back to the listener. In the shape of a thin object that you hang on the wall, the play logo being the only apparent feature, inviting the passerby to press it. A low hum of static can be heard and when the button is pushed, a random station is chosen and plays clearly.
"Commitment Radio" plays with the idea of really owning your radio and that of having to physically alter it to change the channels. In order to change the channels one must go through the material with a thin blade, scanning channels along the thin metal stripe in the middle of the radio. This allows you to have a physical interactiion with a very digital process, and leave marks that correspond to your taste in music and yours alone. Through time you are able to construct a visual history of your listening habits.
This was presented at the Salone del Mobile 2006, at the Fabbrica del Vapore.
